Success Story & Application
SCFM’S CUSTOM SOLUTION SAVED OUR CUSTOMER OVER $2,000,000 DOLLARS JUST IN EQUIPMENT COSTS AND 10% ON HP
The Challenge
We were approached about gas compression for a compression station for multiple services in transmission and storage. Envelope of operation was extensive and complicated. There were two units required for a total of 11,000 hp.
The Solution
- Compressor Manufacturer’s solution was 7” stroke 6 throw reciprocating compressor at 900 rpm.
- We decided that using a 1200 rpm unit with a 5.5” stroke we could lower the upfront costs of the equipment for our customer. Piston speed would remain roughly the same.
- We were able to use pipeline cylinders in the storage performance by using two stages and gain efficiency in both storage and transmission.
The Results
- We were able to reduce major equipment costs alone approximately $2,000,000 over the industry standard unit.
- We were able to get the performance done in a much smaller footprint unit. 7” stroke vs. 5.5” stroke machine. The effect of this change on construction costs could be close to 15% less.
- Our hp required averaged 10% less than the Compressor manufacturer’s recommended performance for the same flow rate. Cost savings at $0.04 per KWH would be roughly $300,000 per year for the life of the equipment.
